An Olympic knees up: British gymnast Hannah Whelan can do the beam... but can't manage the taxi tango after Team GB celebrate at Mahiki

When you’ve been flipping and twisting on a balance beam in front of rapturous crowds, it can be difficult to come back down to earth.
So after a visit to a rather less sporty kind of bar, British gymnast Hannah Whelan apparently decided to try out a few acrobatic moves.
Unfortunately, however, the back of a taxi provided rather less room for manoeuvre than the 20-year-old might have been used to – leaving her tying herself in knots as she struggled to take her seat.

Following a night of celebrations at Mahiki, Whelan, in a tight blue bandage dress, made a dash for a cab home in the early hours of yesterday morning.

The athlete, who failed to win a medal with the British women’s artistic gymnastics team, has frequently been spotted out in the West End since her event finished.
On Wednesday, she joined athletes drinking Ciroc vodka, cognac and an array of cocktails in a private room before needing a helping hand from fellow gymnast Beth Tweddle, who stunned in a form fitting purple dress which she teamed with a pair of peep toe sliver heels, in the taxi home.

Earlier, possibly still exhausted from competition, Tweddle had ‘spent most of the night on a bed in the room’, according to an insider.
Beth and Hannah were joined by the Great Britain's male gymnastic team members Louis Smith, Daniel Purvis and Max Whitlock who seemed to be thoroughly enjoying themselves.
Purvis proved to be a favourite with the ladies as he was pictured outside the club talking to brunette and a blonde.
But it was the brunette lady that seemed keen to get to know bronze medallist as she was seen stroking his face as they got lost in their conversation.

While gymnast Louis Smith performed Marvin Gaye’s Let’s Get it On with boy band JLS using a karaoke machine.
Louis who won silver for his showing on the pommel horse pulled a funny face as he headed home in a car with members of the squad.
As the boys journeyed to the club, Smith who has been actively tweeting throughout the Games uploaded a picture to his Twitter account as they prepared themselves for a night on the town, the hashtag that accompanied the photo read: '#teamtwistup'
Dani King, Philip Hindes and Greg Rutherford who won gold for his fantastic long jump were also on the dance floor at Mahiki.

Victoria Pendleton let her hair down as stepped out hand in hand with her beau Scott Gardner.
Trading in her cycling shorts for a pair of navy blue tailored shorts, the 31-year-old World champion showed her patriotic support in her red, white and blue ensemble.
Known for her love of heels and make-up, Victoria didn't waste any time in dressing up for the occasion.
The star, who wowed on the cover of Esquire, looked polished and stylish in a crisp cream blouse, high-waisted blue shorts and red, white and blue stilettos.
